Local poetry: Lessons by Sheila Marchant

Does a tree know when to stop growing too high

Or does a small voice whisper, “You’re too close to the sky”?

And does that voice whisper to a baby bird,

“You must stop cheeping so your song can be heard”?

Is it the same voice that a child can hear calling

When they’re too close to the edge and near to falling?

And is that the same whisper of conscience we hear

When the voice of temptation draws too near?

For Mother Nature makes use of her many voices

As she teaches us how to make the right choices.
