A new program is aiming to teach high school students one of the oldest forms of art around.

Hapnot Collegiate hosted its first-ever lunchtime beading class last Thursday, Oct. 27.

The class is meant to provide a cultural activity for students, and to give students an entertaining activity during lunch hour.

“We’re always trying to include all students, and many go into sports,” said Hapnot teacher Lori Nagy. “This is a way to have people who are not sports-oriented do something at lunch. I think this could help bring some culture.”

For the first class, participants worked on images of flowers, including poppies to commemorate Remembrance Day.

For Nagy, beading has developed into a skill and a hobby, something she learned at a young age and has done ever since.

“I learned how to bead at school,” she said. “It’s a skill I’ve never lost. Once you learn proper technique, you know how to bead forever.”

Beading classes will be held every Thursday lunch hour at the school’s Student Success Centre.
