Elly on the Arts: Workshops, craft sale and more

Massive congratulations to Noelle Drimmie and her astonishingly talented team of spirited performers for a wild Halloween weekend of “Rocky Horror.” The local production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show sold out two shows at Johnny’s Social Club.

Massive congratulations to Noelle Drimmie and her astonishingly talented team of spirited performers for a wild Halloween weekend of “Rocky Horror.”

The local production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show sold out two shows at Johnny’s Social Club.

Noelle and her cast pulled up their big-boy fishnet stockings and got to work!

It has been said before, but it bears repeating here, Flin Flonners, whether cast, crew or audience, have no fear. The performers came ready to work it and they were fabulous! Let’s do the Time Warp again!

NorVA Centre has some new workshops upcoming. This Saturday, Nov. 5, Jan Layh, a painter from Langenberg, Sask., will be offering a day-long workshop on painting with acrylics at NorVA,
177 Green Street. It is from 9 am to 4 pm.

Jan is no stranger to the community as she has presented here before and loves our Culture Days extravaganzas. She is a retired educator so very familiar with teaching and is a lifelong learner, so she is entirely on top of all new techniques. Her passion is the natural landscape and she has the prairie in her blood.

NorVA Centre is also offering another Raku pottery course beginning with building the pots on Saturday, Nov. 13. The pots take time to dry and to go through their initial firing so the glazing and the final Raku firing are always a week or so later. The results are no less magical, however.

Please call the NorVA Centre to register at
204-687-4237. NorVA Centre manager Mike Spencer will be the instructor.

On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Flin Flon Arts Council presents their biggest fundraiser of the year, the Flin Flon and Area Christmas Arts and Crafts Sale. The annual, day-long event will take place in the Flin Flon Community Hall from
10 am to 4 pm.

The sale attracts vendors from all over Manitoba and Saskatchewan. They offer original, handcrafted items that are not available anywhere else, just in time for Christmas shopping. Many vendors will have Christmas-themed crafts for sale, but there is always a huge variety of items for all ages on your gift list.

There will also be a terrific penny parade of gifts from each of the vendors, grouped into approximately 30 prizes with tickets on sale at the Arts Council table.

This year, NorVA Centre has rented a sales table for pottery, so we can hardly wait to see that prize!

Lunch will be available for purchase from the Flin Flon Seniors group, in the Seniors Room on the main floor of the Community Hall. For the kids, Santa and his elves will be posing for photographs.

Last year several older “kids” got in on the act and posed for awesome Santa shots with small groups of friends. They were so cute.

The Flin Flon Arts Council counts on this fundraiser to assist with sponsoring all of the events it presents throughout the year. Shows like the bi-annual musical production and all of the concerts by out-of-town acts cost a lot of money to produce in Flin Flon, and though I may be a little biased, I think it is worth it to see the level of performances we are now used to.

Rest assured that the rest of the 2016-17 season will be wonderful, capped off by Grease, the musical the Community Choir is bringing to you in May 2017.

In the next Elly on the Arts column, watch for information on Ham Sandwich’s upcoming production, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s trip to Flin Flon and Home Routes shows with amazing Métis fiddler Sierra Noble.
