We have another really busy time of performances coming up in Flin Flon over the next two weeks, so let’s dive right in and find out what treats are in store for our region in November.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, the Central Canada Film Group presents The Dressmaker, the third outing in their 2016-17 TIFF films series. The movie will be shown at the Dorothy Ash Theatre in Hapnot Collegiate at 7 pm.

On Friday, Nov. 18 and for two shows, a matinee and an evening performance, on Saturday, Nov. 19, Ham Sandwich Theatre presents its annual family show. This year we will be treated to The (Almost) Totally True Story of Hansel and Gretel from directors Alain Lachapelle and Leslie Brown Fernandes.

The cast is large and very age-inclusive and they have been working hard over the last two months to present the best show possible. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 pm on Friday, Nov. 18 and 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturday, Nov. 19 at RH Channing Auditorium in the Community Hall. Tickets are available at Northern Rainbow’s End.

On Sunday, Nov. 20 and Monday, Nov. 21, Home Routes presents Métis fiddler Sierra Noble at Johnny’s Social Club,
177 Green Street.

Sierra is a young woman who has garnered international success over the last few years due to her stellar fiddling skills, humanitarian activism and now her growing abilities as a singer-songwriter.

She began performing in Winnipeg at age 12 and has opened for major acts such as Jon Bon Jovi and Paul McCartney. She has lived in New York City and in Nashville but is now back in Winnipeg, where she recorded and released her new album, City of Ghosts.

Back in 2008 Sierra co-wrote the song, Possibility with Chris Burke-Gaffney and Keith McPherson (remember Keith from the SAGE weekend here in 2015?), which went on to be a major hit in pop radio and in TV theme songs.

The new album, just released in September, has many more great tunes, which will be a feature of the shows here in Flin Flon. Both of the Sierra Noble shows will be at Johnny’s Social Club.  Tickets are available at Northern Rainbow’s End.

Lastly, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet is coming to town! On Tuesday, Nov. 22 the RWB Professional School dancers will present a program of classical and modern ballet at the RH Channing Auditorium.

These young dancers are poised to move into professional ballet companies all over the world, so this is our opportunity to see them dance before they go. This incredible event begins at 7:30 pm. There will be other fundraising opportunities for the Flin Flon Arts Council during the evening so please bring along a little extra so that you can participate fully.

Your Flin Flon Arts Council works really hard to provide arts and culture programming to the whole region, that’s why columns like this one, with four different events over seven performance times in a one-week period, can get written. They do all of this with one part-time employee (Crystal Kolt) and a volunteer board of directors.

Over the next year the Flin Flon Arts Council will be examining the possibility of bringing significant economic diversification to the region. To do that, they will need funding.  In the lead-up to Christmas please consider a donation the FFAC.

You already know what they can do every year with next to nothing, just imagine the possibilities with a little something.  Go to the FFAC website at www.flinflonartscouncil.ca to find their “Donate” button.
