Elly on the Arts: See you at the Cabar-eh, eh?

Who is looking forward to a fun, fabulous Trout Festival? I sure am, but it is a concert on July 1 that really should get your attention. The annual Cabar-eh! Is proud to present the amazing blues guitarist Brent Parkin from Winnipeg.

Who is looking forward to a fun, fabulous Trout Festival?  I sure am, but it is a concert on July 1 that really should get your attention. The annual Cabar-eh! Is proud to present the amazing blues guitarist Brent Parkin from Winnipeg. This man is the real deal, as they say, in the North American blues world.

Brent has been playing the blues professionally for 45 years. He has played lead guitar for legends like the late, great Bo Diddley (yes, the guy from the song) and Gatemouth Brown (who got his name from the gap in his teeth, so don’t even go there with me!).

Brent has been the opening act for James Cotton, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter and the remarkable John Prine, who even though is not a bluesman is one of the best songwriters of modern times.

He also co-founded the blues band Houndog in Winnipeg in 1976 and has continued to grow as an artist ever since. You can expect to hear a mind-boggling mix of Chicago-style blues, swing and country rock and roll at the Cabar-eh! Tickets are available from Greg East at 204-687-0754. It’s gonna be grand, so be there or be...you know.

NorVA Centre is gearing up for its annual summer art classes for kids. There are 10 different classes to try, but you can do your child a favour and sign them up for all of them to provide them with a varied experience making art and fostering their creativity. Leading the classes are professional artists who modify the projects for different ages of children at the same time.

This year, all classes will run from 10 am to 12 pm and 2 to 4 pm, Monday to Friday, and children ages 5 and up are welcome. Pre-teens and teens will be working at their levels of eye-hand coordination and complexity while the younger set will be creating at their own pace.

Monday, July 4 begins with Sock Puppets in the morning and Rock Painting with Monique in the afternoon.

Tuesday, July 5 is Kids’ Clay (hand-building pottery) and in the pm Kids Clay Tile-Making.

Wednesday, July 6 has Papier Mache 1: Building in the morning and Ceramic Painting in the afternoon.

On Thursday, July 7 the project is Tie Dye. Children can bring extra white cotton clothes, pillowcases, etc, to work on. Thursday afternoon is Mixed Media Collage.

The final day, Friday July 8, children from Wednesday’s class come back for Papier Mache 2: Painting, where they can colour their creations. The last class is Collagraph Prints, from 2 to 4 pm on Friday, when the children will be able to use the printmaker at NorVA. Fees apply to all classes.

These will be very rewarding classes for children and will help to establish a lifelong relationship with the arts. That is a good thing.
