We have passed the May long weekend and summer has begun, so the events calendar will begin to slow down a little but we will have a couple of pushes before that happens, so buckle up!

On Wednesday, May 23 (that’s today, as you read this) the second of the Flin Flon Flutist Concert series spring performances takes place on the Flin Flon Community Hall stage. The wonderful Mikylo Odut will perform the spectacular music he originally prepared for the Associate to the Royal Conservatory of Toronto (ARCT) diploma exam recital. He will be accompanied on this occasion by Anna Harrison.

The ARCT diploma exam is the highest level of examination provided for all instruments from the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). Successful candidates who pass the exam (a grade of 70 per cent or higher is required) will receive a diploma, graduating from the RCM certificate program with honours. The examination components featured in the recital include professional and prominent solos from the music of the last 300 years, as well as the most popular and technically demanding orchestral excerpts.

This exceptional young man will graduate from high school this year and will go on to music school in the fall. Perhaps we will be treated to an announcement of where that will be.

Tickets for the performance are $25 at the door, $12 for students and $6 for children. The concert begins at 7 pm (it is a school night!) and doors open at 6:30 pm.

On May 25, 26 and 27, it’s Pink Floyd weekend at Johnny’s Social Club. Johnny’s Antisocial Band will back up another strong contingent of vocalists to perform the greatest hits and some lesser known material from this incredible group of the late ’60s and ’70s. Dark Side of The Moon and The Wall, released in 1973 and 1979 respectively, are two of the highest selling albums of all time, and are well worth a listen.

The best-known members of the band are Syd Barrett and Roger Waters, with David Gilmour joining a little later.

Barrett was a challenging bandmate, as he struggled with mental illness and he left the group in 1968, but had already contributed “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” which is perhaps the best song title ever written.

Waters led the band through their best albums, Ummagumma, the aforementioned Dark Side of The Moon and The Wall, but David Gilmour was the vocalist and took a leadership role in the later years.

Pink Floyd was famous for concept albums and this weekend’s shows will follow that lead with poetic, spoken explorations of the material and the history of the group. Rumour has it that Pete Gardner will make a very rare appearance! The shows are pretty well sold out but there are some tickets left at the Orange Toad for Sunday’s performance. Tickets are $20 and the doors open at 7 pm with music at 7:30 pm. Bring your own eats – libations are available in the venue. See you there!
