Lots of great events coming in the next two weeks to the Flin Flon/Creighton/Denare Beach region. And for our friends in Cranberry Portage and The Pas, you are more than welcome to join us! You know you had great fun at the Sierra Noble concert last week.

NorVA Centre artists are back from their annual summer retreat at Denare Beach and are ready to share art-making techniques with a whole new set of kids’ classes throughout August. They have already presented “Crazy Hats” and today, August 9, Pearl Tippett (summer student staff) is offering a marionettes workshop. Learn to build a string puppet!

On Friday, August 11, Pearl will teach needle felting, a technique that combines fabric art and sculpture to create two- or three-dimensional pieces.

The following week, leading up to Flin Flon’s first Pride weekend, everyone is welcome to participate in the creation of the NorVA Centre float for the Pride parade.

Building will take place every day, Monday to Friday. For the last two weeks of August, they return to regularly scheduled kids classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 pm.

Gallery manager Mike Spencer will be back on board for kite building, square foot canvases, watercolour painting and acrylic painting.

Wood ’n’ Wire performance series presents a super summer concert on Friday, August 11 and Saturday, August 12 with several new performers on the Flin Flon music scene.

Under the musical direction of Mark Kolt, we will be treated to songs from Bubba Adegboye, a nurse at the Flin Flon General Hospital, Courtney Lycan from Ruth Betts Community School, Mari Pettersen from CFAR and Holly Freeborn, who has been playing Local Routes shows to build confidence and is now ready to share with a bigger audience.

They will be joined onstage by veterans like Allan Krassilowsky, Susan Lethbridge, whom it will be wonderful to see onstage again, Kevin Imrie and Kim Jones. As of this writing, there are still a few tickets available at The Orange Toad.

On Friday, August 18, right on the eve of Pride weekend, we are completely spoiled for choice. At Johnny’s Social Club, Knite performs. This is a band of young men from our area that includes Tristan Simon, Derek Kemp and Aaron Gardner.

They will be playing a mix of original material and cover tunes from very contemporary artists. They have not been heard yet but all have been working on music for many years, so do yourselves a favour and go hear them.

Also on August 18, Ann Ross and Doug McGregor offer a house concert with the incomparable Ben Sures from Edmonton. Ben has been in Flin Flon before, with the Home Routes tour, and is now making a fly-in visit as part of his western Canada summer swing.

Ben has been touring and performing as a singer-songwriter for more than 20 years. He plays a contemporary and quirky brand of original music with great energy that is always entertaining.

He has released six albums over the years and is worth hearing. The concert address is 183 Murton Boulevard and you should contact Ann at [email protected] to reserve a seat.
