As Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach gear up for summer, arts and cultural happenings just keep on coming.

The big event in this time period is the opening night of the Main ARTery public art gallery on Main Street in Flin Flon and in Creighton. It will take place on Wednesday, June 19 (not the 13th as previously noted) from 5 to 7 p.m.

Twenty-eight banners will hang from light standards on Flin Flon’s Main Street and several more will be in Creighton and Denare Beach throughout the summer, showing the work and talent of over 30 Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach-area artists.

Many artists are quite familiar to the region’s arts and culture community, but there are some surprises too.

On opening day, there will be a barbecue in Creighton at 5 p.m. and a wine and cheese soiree on the outdoor patio at Mugsy’s Cafe on Main Street Flin Flon. Other festivities, like sidewalk chalk art for the children, will take place at Pioneer Square. It is hoped that the flowers, which usually beautify Main Street, will be on display by then as well. Look to this column for more news about Main Street Revitalization and Flower Power activities throughout the summer.

Some of the artists who will be on display were also participants in the Northern Juried Arts Show in Thompson. We have received the results of this event and are happy to tell you that Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach artists were very well represented, winning 13 of the possible 32 prizes, plus the theme special award.

The awards were presented to Monique Rainville, first in painting; Laura Bryson, third in painting; Elizabeth Fitzsimons, first in watercolour and Jan Modler, third in watercolour; Rosimeire Anjos, honourable mention in drawing/printmaking; Tamra Martin, first in crafts; Elaine Angelski, second and Mike Spencer, honourable mention also in crafts; Patricia Evans, third in fibre arts;  and Lorna Heuchert, honourable mention in this category.

Brandy Bloxom was first in photography and Braeden Tetlock was second with Myah Leclerc achieving honourable mention in the youth category.

The only category area artists were shut out of was sculpture and the amazing Theresa Burrows of Thompson won two of the three prizes awarded in this one. Really wish we could have been there to see them and, of course, the rest of the show!

Congratulations to all the participants. We hope you got valuable feedback and were encouraged to continue with your art. The audience is certainly appreciative of everything you do and the beauty it brings to our lives. Perhaps all the NJAS winners should wear their ribbons at Main ARTery opening so that we can congratulate them in person!

The incredible Trevor Gordon (Sytnick) will present Loaded Mic 6, another extraordinary night of music at Johnny’s Social Club on Saturday, June 22. We really don’t know how these wonderful musicians find the time to rehearse and entertain us as they all have full-time jobs outside of their musical personas, but here we go again!

Musical artists for this show include Courtney Lycan and Chris Lengyel; Emily Sparling; John Taylor; Syd Tippett; Panty Hose, Ishakapella and the Fella and – new to us – performers Tonopah and Olivia, Newt and John (don’t ask; we have no idea).

Sir Trevor (to quote musical oracle Keith Reed) will host and insure the sound is spot on, though that happens, in no small part thanks to his partner Lisa.

By the time you read this, tickets will be on sale at The Orange Toad.
