Elly on the Arts: Calendar full of Homecoming events

Homecoming is just around the corner – like tomorrow! There are so many arts-related events happening over the next few days that it would strain the bounds of my little column to list them all.

There are so many arts-related events happening over the next few days that it would strain the bounds of my little column to list them all.

There are many art exhibitions around town that will be well worth your time to see. At the NorVA Centre (177 Green Street), take in the Homecoming Exhibit, an amazing show of old and new pieces by area artists of the last 70 years.

This show reflects the vibrancy of culture in the region, past and present. It also reminds us that art is a living thing and that it gives life to a community.

While you are at NorVA, take a moment to look at the new outdoor mural that graces the front facade. This piece was a collaboration between NorVA artists and the community, and reflects the four seasons of life in Flin Flon. Snow and music are the predominant motifs. It’s lovely and makes the place look grand.

Another thing to do while visiting NorVA at Homecoming is to sign the Homecoming painting. It is a collaboration of NorVA artists as well and is part of their fundraising raffle. If you are a little confused by this invitation to sign somebody else’s art work, you will just have to come in to figure it out! Trust me, it’s worth it!

There will be another exhibit of artwork during Main Street Days, in the former office space above the Freedom’s Way secondhand shop.

This show, put together by Greg East with help from Ron Watt, has been a bit secretive, at least from me! Perhaps that is due to an overheard conversation that suggested only male artists would be shown in this exhibition, which led to a threat of protesting women artists outside the venue.

Last word was there would be seven guys and a “gal(!)” included. I’m going – but I reserve the right to outrage, should the need arise.

Local artist Eila Duncalfe is having a solo show during Homecoming, in the old restaurant space at the Gateway. I’m certain the work will be enough of an attraction, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could have some footlongs there as well?

Local photographer Bruce Reid will have his Photo Book of Flin Flon for sale at various venues throughout the weekend as well. His book promises to be very scenic.

While on the hunt for books, check out Circle of Roots, available at the library. Local author and all around lovely man Harry C. Hobbs launched his novel last week here in Flin Flon and will have his prairie debut on July 11 at McNally Robinson in Winnipeg.

The story is about Vanessa Miller, who has begun a new life as a teacher at a posh private school in Ontario after escaping her small-town Saskatchewan past. When she marries the school chaplain, she learns you can’t outrun your past.

Harry has lived in Flin Flon for 41 years, after escaping Ontario himself.
