The Manitoba Arts Network Showcase conference, held in Flin Flon last week, is going really well
as of this writing.

We have more than 100 people from all over Manitoba and a representative from Dryden, Ontario. Then we have about 50 performers in a variety of configurations, solo acts, duos, a family of five playing fiddles and step-dancing.

There is also a circus! Vague de Cirque, from Quebec, performs acrobatics inspired by the small traditional European circuses.

We have the opportunity to learn all manner of things, from audience development to website design and management. You can expect more and better information about the arts and cultural life of Flin Flon in the near future.

The artists performing the Showcase shows were wonderful, but we have some remarkable and exciting events coming up we should talk about (it is Flin Flon, after all!).

This Saturday, Oct. 31 there will be a special “retro” Wood ’n’ Wire concert at Johnny’s Social Club.

The Anti-Social Band will accompany the ageless Susan Lethbridge, the astonishing Allan Krassilowski and the incomparable Bob Simpson. I do believe that Brent Lethbridge will be rockin’ out a bit that evening
as well.

Tickets are $15 and are available at the usual outlets. You can bring your own treats to the show.

On Friday, Nov. 6 the newly formed Flin Flon-Cranberry Portage Folk Music Society will present Leaf Rapids, a wonderful indie-folk band from Manitoba (but not actually Leaf Rapids – we will have to ask about the origins of their name when they are here).

They will also perform at Johnny’s Social Club and the ticket price is $20. Tickets are available at The Orange Toad and at NorVA. Regular Social Club rules for treats apply.

Thursday, Nov. 19 and Friday, Nov. 20 are the dates for the next Home Routes shows. The performer is Scott Cook from Edmonton. He is a “prairie balladeer,” a singer-songwriter who wears his heart on his sleeve.

The Nov. 19 performance is at 183 Murton Boulevard and the 20th is at 19 Hemlock Drive. The cost is $20 and treats are welcome but not required.

Lastly, the Flin Flon Arts Council proudly presents the Flin Flon Community Choir’s Christmas Show with very special guest Jesse Peters and his band.

Jesse hails from Toronto and performs a great mix of jazz, blues and funk styles, all with an original twist. The choir will join him onstage and become the best group of back-up singers in the North.

It will be a great night, so get your tickets at the Arts Council’s Arts and Craft Show and Sale on Friday, Nov. 6. Tickets will also be available at the usual outlets, Northern Rainbow’s End and the Flin Flon Arts Council office.
