Two Winnipeg indie bands formed a harmonic merger in Flin Flon as Johnny’s Social Club hosted Leaf Rapids, a singer-songwriter duo featuring Keri and Devin Latimer, and Slow Leaves, aka solo guitarist and songwriter Grant Davidson.

The Nov. 6 concert was hosted by the newly formed Flin Flon Cranberry Portage Folk Music Society.

Mike Spencer, who is spearheading the society, explained that the initiative formed to bring more folk music to the community, and its key goal is to create a music and arts festival in the local area.

The Leaf Rapids/Slow Leaves concert was the first fundraiser for that project.

The sold-out show featured the melodic vocals of Davidson and Keri Latimer and the deep bass rhythms of Devin Latimer. Keri Latimer impressed the audience when she accompanied herself on a theremin, an early 20th-century instrument that is relatively rare in popular music.

The theremin is played without physical contact from the musician, who manipulates electrical frequencies with her hands, evoking eerie, haunting sounds. After the show, a few curious locals tried out the unique instrument.
