The NorVA Centre’s walls will soon be filled with art from 50 different artists, but there is still time to get your piece in.

The Centre’s annual Square Foot Gallery is returning for another year and is currently accepting submissions. Artists can purchase a spot in the exhibition for $25 for a canvas, with each additional piece an extra $5. Youth interested in taking part can enter for $10 a piece.

The deadline for submissions is Sept. 22. The centre expects over 200 pieces by 50 different artists to be displayed and sold. The event is capped off with a live auction on Oct. 20.

NorVA assistant gallery manager Neal Smedegaard said artists have creatively used the limited space in the past. Even artists who aren’t confident painters can contribute.

“[The artists] do whatever they feel like doing,” he said.

“One time we had someone bring in blueberry pies, and then on the canvas, it said, ‘This canvas includes three blueberry pies.’”

Proceeds from each piece sale are split in half between the artist and NorVA.

“You're forced to be creative with the 12-by-12 canvas,” Smedegaard said.

“We've also seen lots of people do things where they'll combine multiple canvases to make one big piece.”

The Square Foot auction is the biggest fundraiser for NorVA - not just for dollars, but in floor space and participation.

“It's our biggest fundraiser for the center, besides getting grants,” Smedegaard said.

“It's also the biggest exhibition that we hold, it covers the most area inside of our center, it also has the most pieces inside of it and the most amount of artists that we have collaborated with on an exhibition.”

Smedegaard encouraged anyone and everyone to apply.

“You don't have to be a NorVA artist,” Smedegaard said.

“You can be someone that we've never met before and never really done art before, but wants to take a step into it. It gives you rules to follow so that you can have some guidance into what you're planning to do.”

The centre also gets submissions from artists outside of the Flin Flon area.

“A lot of people feel more welcome to come and take part in it,” Smedegaard said.

“We also get lots of applications and pieces brought in from people outside of Manitoba or down south, outside of the immediate area.”
