A pilot project that helps Flin Flonners put the earth first could become permanent.
Last March, on a trial basis, the Recycling Centre increased its red bag recycling pick-up program from once every other week to once a week.
The trial is set to expire on Sept. 30, but centre administrator Deb Odegaard says the weekly service will likely carry on with some modifications, such as travelling only to areas of Flin Flon with confirmed pick-ups.
When the program began in 2010, pick-ups took place every other Wednesday, with the schedule staggered around individual areas of Flin Flon and Creighton.
When Creighton began offering free recycling pick-ups for all town residents in 2014, the program changed so that all Flin Flon recycling was picked up every other Wednesday.
Some users had difficulty knowing which week recyclables were picked up, or would run out of space to store the material if they had to miss a pick-up day.
Such concerns prompted the six-month pilot project to offer weekly pick-ups.
Until the end of September, any Flin Flon resident who places recycling in a special red bag (available for a fee at several local retailers) on their front curb on a Wednesday morning will have it picked up.
The sale of the red bag pays for the cost of the pick-up service. Two more bags and boxes of recyclables can be picked up with each red bag.
Odegaard encourages anyone who has not made use of the program so far to do so before Sept. 30, as the program will be re-evaluated after that.
She said there has been some increase in the number of people using the program.
Recyclables can also be dropped off at the Recycling Centre at 9 Timber Lane or the trailer located in the vacant lot near Canadian Tire.
