Nigel Bart isn’t afraid to shine a light on his own mental illness, especially if it means helping others.

Hope North, the local suicide prevention committee, has invited Bart to speak to the public tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 27.

“The committee believes that raising awareness about the prevalence of mental health issues and reducing stigma is key,” said the committee’s Ebony Trubiak. “Courageous speakers like Nigel Bart help to encourage more conversations around how to help people feel better.”

Bart has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He is the founder of Winnipeg’s Artbeat Studio, which provides space for artists with mental health issues.

His presentations explore his own experience with mental illness and the use of art as a creative outlet.

Bart will be at the NorVA Centre (beside Johnny’s Social Club) on Thursday, Oct. 27 beginning at 6:30 pm. The public is welcome to attend this free presentation.
