Flin Flon firefighters are tipping their hats to the community as more than $15,000 was raised at this year’s Boot Drive.
Fire Chief Jim Petrie was amazed at the support from the fundraiser, held last Friday, Sept. 12.
“The vast majority of people wished us well and were happy that we switched it to local charities,” said Petrie. “And that’s pretty indicative of the amount we raised.”
Fifteen firefighters and five employees from Scotiabank collected spare change – and more generous donations – totaling $10,465.
Flin Flon’s Scotiabank branch will also contribute $5,000 to the total – making it $15,465.
The Flin Flon, Creighton and Area SPCA and the Lord’s Bounty Food Bank will reap the benefits with roughly $7,700 going to each.
“It’s amazing, absolutely amazing,” said Petrie.
In years past the fire department has donated Boot Drive proceeds to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Petrie says it was a “great decision” to change the focus to local organizations.
