Creighton and Denare Beach residents whose optometrist is based in Manitoba are still eligible for an expanded eye care program unveiled by the Saskatchewan
government.
Saskatchewan announced last week that provincial residents who have diabetes will receive coverage for annual eye exams.
Government spokesperson Tyler McMurchy says the province will cover those patients who receive services in Manitoba.
“The exam does not need to be performed by the patient’s own optometrist,” said McMurchy. “However…this service is only covered by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health once per year, so only one optometrist will receive payment for this exam per patient in a 12-month period.”
While the province will cover the cost of the exam, McMurchy says it will be based on Saskatchewan rates.
“For a Saskatchewan resident accessing optometry services in Manitoba, we will pay the Manitoba optometrist for an insured service to a Saskatchewan beneficiary,” he said, but “it will be according to the Saskatchewan payment rates and assessment rules in effect at that time.”
