Demchinsky - Mary Demchinsky of Kamsack and formerly of Canora passed away peacefully at the Kamsack Hospital on July 22, 2009 at the age of 87 years. Mary was born on her father and mother's farm near Donwell on December 12, 1921. Her father was Joseph Martsinkiw, born in Canada, as was her mother, Anna Nikota. Anna and Joseph were from homesteading families in the Donwell-Mikado area. Mary went to school near Donwell as did her five brothers. Mary was the oldest child in the family. Her brother, Michael, died in his youth. Two other brothers, Tony and Peter predeceased her. Two brothers, Edward and Reginald, remain. Because of her own mother's poor health, Mary remained on the farm, almost a second mother to her brothers. After they grew older, she was able to strike out on her own, working saleswoman, first briefly in stores in Canora, and then, in the late 1940s in Flin Flon. She met Stanley Demchinsky, another Canora-area migrant, who had taken up a mining job in Flin Flon. They were married in 1950, moving across the border to the nearby town of Creighton, Sask. Over 40 years in Creighton, Mary and Stan raised four children. While raising her family, Mary became owner of the Creighton Ready to Wear, a clothing store she ran for more than a dozen years. When Stan retired, they decided to move back to their hometown, Canora, where they lived until the last year. For most of the past year they lived in the senior's facility in Kamsack. Mary is survived by her four children - Bryan Demchinsky, Dee Lewis, Sharon Trubiak and Sterling Demchinsky - six grandchildren - Amber Trubiak, Ebony Donaghy, Shannon Zambon, Curtis Trubiak, Robert Trubiak and Mark Lewis, and by four great grandchildren - Jehlin, Dryden, Jordan and Emily. Mary's husband, Stan Demchinsky, passed away on July 8. Mary will be dearly missed by her family and friends. The Visitation was held on Sunday, July 26 and the Funeral Service was held on Monday, July 27 both from the Chapel of Leson's Funeral Home, Canora with Rev. Susan Salo officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to St. George's Anglican Church, Canora as tokens of remembrance. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON'S FUNERAL HOME, Canora. (563-5671).
