WILFRED JOHN GIES On Friday, October 10, 2003, Wilfred passed away peacefully at West Park Manor at the age of 88 years. Wilfred will be forever remembered by his beloved wife Helen; son Philip (Heather); his much loved grandchildren, Michael (Joanna), Kelly and Andrew; his new great-granddaughter Olivia; brother Hardy; sisters, Viola, Hilda and Lovina. He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Mary; sister Lena; brothers, Charlie and Percy; and his first wife Velma. Dad was born in Storthoaks, SK, and enjoyed a life-long love of mechanics. In addition to farming, as a young man, he and his brother Percy ran their own garage. He later moved to Brandon where he worked at Canadian Motors and became a journeyman mechanic. Dad practiced his trade in Flin Flon, Thompson and Long Beach, California. He retired to Hemet, California. Wilfred and Helen enjoyed many years in their motorhome as Snowbirds. They loved travelling throughout the United States and Canada, visiting friends, family and making new acquaintances. Dad was a private person who dearly loved his family. For many years he suffered ill health, but was never one to complain. In compliance with Wilfred's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A reception will be held at the West Park Manor, 3199 Grant Avenue on Tuesday, October 14 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. to share our remembrances. Our family would like to sincerely thank the dedicated, sensitive and caring staff at West Park Manor who cared for Dad the last few years, in particular, Marshall and Rosemarie. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Wilfred's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice or to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Street, Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3 .
