Foran Mining Corp. is moving ahead on a summer exploration program it hopes will bolster the case for a potential mine outside Flin Flon.
The junior miner announced yesterday it will resume exploration around its highly touted McIlvenna Bay deposit, located 65 kilometres west of Flin Flon in Saskatchewan.
The exploration program will include geological mapping and sampling of outcrop and drill core for lithogeochemical analysis and interpretation.
Foran said the primary goals of the exploration program are twofold.
First, the company wants to better define the stratigraphy most prospective for volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) mineralization north and south of the deposit.
Second, it wants to identify local hydrothermal alteration zones associated with VMS mineralization.
Foran has indicated its hope of opening a mine at the McIlvenna site.
In 2011, president and CEO Patrick Soares boldly proclaimed Foran’s goal of one day operating “a world-class mine” at the property.
As with many pronouncements related to ore bodies in this region, that was widely greeted with a healthy dose of I’ll-believe-it-when-I-see-it skepticism.
