Thanks to community support, a Flin Flon family’s dream of owning a Habitat for Humanity home is getting closer to reality.

Ted Elliott of the Habitat 53° chapter says the build is coming along but still relies on the help of the community.

“It all depends on the availability of volunteers,” said Elliott.

As of earlier this week, the majority of the outside of the house had been finished – with the exception of some siding – and work will continue on the inside once the electrical work is completed.

On the inside, the partitions have all been framed in and the electrical pane is in. Once the electrical work is done, the next steps will be insulation and drywall.

The cold temperatures outside play a factor in the process of the build, but Elliott says the number of volunteers is what drives the project forward more so.

He encourages anyone looking to get involved to contact Kathy McCormick at 204-687-6582 or Katie Anderson at 204-687-3935 to find out when the next workdays are.

“Usually we’re there on Saturdays but we may be able to sneak some volunteers in during the week,” he said.

Elliott doesn’t have a timeline to finish the family home, Flin Flon’s first Habitat for Humanity build, because of all the factors like the weather and volunteers.

As the weather warms up in the spring months, Elliott says the outside work will be finished.
