The Flin Flon Bombers have dealt cancer a punishing bodycheck.
The club raised over $3,300 from a pizza fundraiser, with half of the proceeds – $1,655 – going to the Relay for Life.
Maureen Regan started selling pizzas nearly six years ago as a fundraiser for her cosmetology class at Many Faces Education Centre.
The class sold 93 pizzas. She had no idea the success she would soon be looking at.
As the fundraiser grew in popularity, so did the overall amount raised.
In the past, Reagan has helped the Bombers and other organizations in the community with pizza sales.
One the weekend of February 7 and 8, Reagan’s homemade pizza fundraiser was a success as 450 pies were made and delivered to satisfied customers.
Averaging about 200 pizzas in about four and a half hours, the group of 23 helpers were certainly busy.
Through the funds raised, the Bombers were able to keep half of the proceeds with the other half being donated to the cancer-fighting Relay for Life, which is set for September.
This marks the third year for the Relay for Life, held every other year, at the Creighton Ball Diamond.
Through the relay, local organizations, teams and individuals have helped to raise more than $100,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Reagan averages four pizza fundraisers a year but only has the need for three this year as the Many Faces grad class doesn’t have the 20 volunteers it would need to make it work.
She is encouraging organizations, teams or other groups looking for fundraisers to contact her.
Reagan says between 20 and 23 volunteers are needed for the fundraiser over the course of two days.
“We’ve got it down to quite a science,” she said, noting some volunteers will be cooking, some will be delivering and there are plenty of other jobs to do.
