The Flin Flon and area communities continue to show their support for Habitat for Humanity 53º. In recent weeks they have added another $700 toward building a home through the ongoing Buy A Block campaign.
Habitat co-chair Kathy McCormick is pleased with the continued support.
“It’s moving along wonderfully,” she said.
Roughly $1,800 has been raised in total through the campaign, with proceeds going toward building of the home.
“We hope to wrap this up at the end of [this] week,” said McCormick.
When all the bricks are sold the campaign will have raised $2,110 toward the build.
“The money generated will go toward finishing to pay for windows and doors for our first Habitat home,” she said, adding she is eager to have the campaign completed.
Held up
Construction of the Habitat home on Steventon Boulevard began last fall, but a long and cold winter has put a hold on the progress.
The foundation, plumbing and a subfloor have been installed, but volunteers had to wait for frozen ground to thaw before work could continue.
“The frost in the ground was the big hold-up,” she said. “It was down 11 feet, so we had to wait for everything to settle before we could proceed.”
McCormick expected to see the lumber for the walls arriving on Friday with work to continue
on the weekend.
Habitat for Humanity 53º continues look for help from volunteers to get the house built. And as McCormick has learned first-hand, you don’t have to be a carpenter by trade.
“I’ve never built a house before,” she said. “I’ve seen lots of houses being built, but I’ve never built one.”
McCormick encourages area residents to sign up and volunteer with this unique project.
“To actually be in on this [project] and to see it come from the ground up is quite the experience,” she said.
McCormick signed up for Habitat for Humanity in February 2012 when talks first began in the Flin Flon community. She didn’t know much about the process, but had seen television shows about it before. The now-co-chair says she wasn’t sure what to expect when the process started, but it is more then she could have expected.
“I started as the treasurer,” she said. “I knew I would give my time, but to become this close is just amazing.
“Seeing things move along is rewarding,” she said, adding she now holds five titles with the organization.
McCormick began as treasurer and has since added fundraising and event coordinator, Re-Store manager, co-chair and volunteer to her titled.
“My favourite is that I get to volunteer,” she said, proudly.
The Buy A Block campaign continues and people interested in contributing can still buy blocks at The Reminder ofice,
CFAR Radio and Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store.
