A charitable foundation is accepting grant applications for community improvement projects.

The Northern Neighbours Foundation is taking applications with a helping hand from the Moffat Foundation, a Winnipeg-based organization.

This year, the Moffat Foundation has provided Northern Neighbours with a total of $55,000 to award in 2017. Additional money from local foundations will add to the total, which is likely to eclipse last year’s amount of $83,000.

“We get anywhere from 15 to 25 applications a year,” said Jane Robillard, chairwoman for the Northern Neighbours Foundation. “When people get the applications, there’s a guide with it that tells them what they can apply for.

“We fund all kinds of projects, [including] projects that will help disadvantaged individuals and groups.”

While funding will not be given to help groups cover operating costs, several items and projects can be funded through the grants. Appliances, like washers, dryers and fridges can be funded, as well as computers, furniture and other necessities.

Potential applicants can seek funding for projects in Flin Flon, Creighton, Denare Beach, Cranberry Portage, Snow Lake or Sherridon. Groups such as Lord’s Bounty Food Bank and the Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre have received funding from the program in the past, as have groups from nearby communities.

“We don’t turn down very many applications,” said Robillard. “If they meet the criteria and we have the funds, we make sure we can get that money out to the community.”

Grant applications can be found online or at the Flin Flon Public Library. The deadline for grant applications is March 15. Successful projects will be chosen later in the year, with fund distribution happening in June.
