Question: How come the council meeting minutes are not posted on the City of Flin Flon website, like they are for other municipalities? Will this be changed? Answer: Good question. I am not sure why they are not posted to the website but I have to say this is the first request I have encountered in this regard. It is easy to do and I cannot see why this would be a problem. I will look into this and, hopefully in the near future, they get posted to the website. Question: The city employs one full-time, dedicated firefighter, that being the fire chief. Given the day-job responsibilities of the rest of our firefighters, is the city adequately protected, especially considering we also cover the cottage areas that do not pay taxes to the city? Answer: You raise two issues that need to be addressed, one is the question of full time fire fighters and the other is the cottage area coverage. Do I feel the city is adequately covered under it's current arrangement of volunteer fire fighters? My answer is YES. I do feel we have adequate coverage. We do not get that many calls to warrent a full time service. When calls do come in, our response times have been really good and we, usually, have enough members responding to the initial call. It is only when our members are responding to calls or when attending fire practices do our members get paid which is nowhere near what it would cost if they were employed as full time fire fighters. I would like to thank our members for dedicating their time to join our service and to their employers for allowing them the ability to sometimes having to leave work to answer calls. I was a member of the Altona Fire Department/Ambulance service when I lived there and I appreciate the dedication of all those involved so as to make a volunteer system work as efficiently as it can. Your second question centers around service to the cottage areas. Yes we will respond to fire calls in this area if we are required. We have an agreement in principle to attempt to provide this service but we do so on a cost recovery basis, from either the province or an insurance company. Our first priority will always be Flin Flon regardless. * * * Send your questions for Mayor Therien to The Reminder by phone at 687-3454, fax at 687-4473, e-mail at news@ ffdailyreminder.com or standard delivery at "Ask the Mayor," C/O The Reminder, 14 North Avenue, Flin Flon, MB, R8A OT2.
