Question: I am wondering with all of this happening up at Snow Lake, if Flin Flon will benefit and, if so, do you think there will be more businesses coming to Flin Flon? Mayor Therien: First off, I think it is great for Snow Lake with all that is happening and will happen over the next couple of years. Your question was, do I think Flin Flon will benefit from any of this and the answer is, I think it will. When Lalor Lake gets going, there will be a need for a fairly large workforce, most of whom will not be able to be accommodated by Snow Lake. Mayor Zamzow of Snow Lake has stated that he feels the population of Snow Lake would probably reach the 1,000-person mark, or an increase of about 180 from their current numbers. Lalor was announced as probably needing 400-plus workers. The excess has got to come from somewhere. If Lalor is operated somewhat like Namew Lake was, then I can see quite a few people commuting back and forth to our area. Of course, all of this is strictly speculation at this time. We still have to deal with the closing of the smelter well in advance of anything happening in Snow Lake. The question of whether there could be any more businesses coming to Flin Flon is something I do not think we can answer at this time. With everything being very speculative at this time, I am not sure what the reaction of the business world would be. Again, you are dealing with a negative first, with the closing of the smelter, with something positive a few years down the road. * * * Question: Do you think racism is a problem in Flin Flon and what can be done about it? Mayor Therien: Racism is such a subjective subject and as such, I do not feel I can give you an answer to your question. * * * Send your questions for Mayor Therien to The Reminder by phone at 687-3454, fax at 687-4473, e-mail at [email protected] or standard delivery at "Ask the Mayor", C/O The Reminder, 14 North Avenue, Flin Flon, MB, R8A 0T2.
