Question: Princess Boulevard was recently made into a one-way system to ensure the safety of children coming and going to McIsaac School, largely due to the amount of congestion caused by parental drop-off of students. Residents have since learned that the city plans to designate the park side of Princess Boulevard as being the drop-off area for students being driven to school. What will council do to ensure that the homeowners will have parking in an already congested area? Mayor Therien: If there is one traffic issue that council has had to deal with continuously over the years, it is the McIsaac School area. We have been asked numerous times to deal with various issues, all of which centre around the health and safety of the students. We have had requests to deal with idling vehicles waiting to pick up children and the exhaust fumes which enter the school, all the way to this particular issue which causes you some concern. The answer to your question is: Yes, we will be bringing forward a request to designate the one side of Princess Boulevard as a drop-off zone for those who drive their children to school. Having said that, the request is for the first 200 feet only and should not cause a major hardship to the residents as they have back lane access to parking, parking on the other side of the street or parking outside of the first 200 feet. (Editor's note: This question was sent and answered prior to the city giving final approval last week for the drop-off zone). * * * Forward The Reminder your questions for Mayor Therien by phone at 687-3454, fax at 687-4473, e-mail at [email protected] or standard delivery at Ask the Mayor, C/O The Reminder, 14 North Avenue, Flin Flon, R8A 0T2.
