Bust the Winter Blues Festival After this year's festival, organizers may want to remove the word 'bust' from the title of this event. Ask nine of 10 people who participated and they would say they enjoyed it. How could you not? It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, there were only about 30 people at Ross Lake to take in the festivities. Half of those were Bomber players, who only had the chance to play shinny with a handful of locals. When CFAR announced that the dog sled races were cancelled due to the mild weather, that chased everyone away. When weather plays a factor in canceling a big event, there's not much that can be done. The last bust was the social at the Flin Flon Community Hall. While the music was good, the turnout was low. It didn't help that another benefit was held recently for a more important cause Ð helping former resident Andy Johnsgaard, who is recovering from a motorcycle accident in Whitehorse, Yukon. On a positive note, the winners in the crib tournament were Mitch Pruden, David Sothern, and Melvin Sewap. John Balfour had the high hand. Pee Wee Hockey Tournament The local newspaper will shoulder some of the blame for not promoting this earlier, but last weekend's minor hockey tournament wasn't well attended. Most aren't, as the valued supporters tend to be family and relatives. Why don't others go? They would if it was the Jr. A Bombers. Staying with minor hockey, CBC's sitcom The Tournament was a big bust. It lasted one year Ð is anyone surprised? School Spirit Along with the Bust the Winter Blues Festival and Pee Wee hockey tournament was Hapnot Collegiate's basketball hoopla. Again, like minor hockey, they face the same disappointment of low attendance. Time or lack of interest is likely the main root to this problem, but why don't locals who have no direct association to the kids playing school sports not support them by watching? Imagine the feeling they would have with large crowds cheering them on? Nobody's asking for 200-plus people to pack the joint, but why not go, especially when it's free? The results weren't a bust as the Kopper Kings and Kweens are true royalty after winning their tournament. Their neighbouring team, the Creighton Kodiaks, also had success as the boys placed third. No-bust Bombers Good luck to the Bombers as they face the Melfort Mustangs in the survivor series. The series begins tonight in Melfort. Get ready for your first home playoff game in five years this Sunday.
