Creighton residents hoping to reside in the community throughout their golden years are gaining a new option. Construction of Bedrock Manor, a 12-suite seniors' apartment complex, officially began yesterday on vacant land near the Creighton Trailer Court. "New housing is always welcome in Creighton and Bedrock Manor has generated tremendous excitement," said Mayor Bruce Fidler. "The new apartments will help residents who have worked and lived here their entire lives stay close to home and family and can help us build a lasting and sustainable community." With a shovel in hand, Fidler joined other dignitaries at a sod-turning ceremony yesterday at the site of the $842,000 project, expected to be completed in May 2005. The one-storey affordable housing initiative will be designed to serve Creighton seniors with low to modest incomes. "Projects like this one in our northern communities contribute significantly to the health and well-being of our residents," said Creighton MLA Joan Beatty, who could not attend yesterday's ceremony. Beatty said Bedrock Manor and similar initiatives represent "a starting point to independence and lasting participation in the social and economic life of the province." Bedrock Manor is being developed by Prince Albert-based R.L. Miller Contracting Ltd., which will also own and manage the facility. Project funding was made possible through a partnership between the developer, the Town of Creighton and the two higher levels of government. This partnership raised the approximately $842,000 required for the project, nearly two-thirds of which came from the Centenary Affordable Housing Program, which involves the three levels of government. The Town of Creighton has contributed land, sewer and water services, while the developer has privately financed the balance of the total funding.
