Mayerthorpe, Alta. - The RCMP are defending how they handled the events that led to four constables being murdered last week, in the face of sharp criticism from a former senior Mountie. Former RCMP superintendent Clyde Kitteringham spoke out Monday about what he considers a crucial lack of protection for the officers killed by a gunman in Alberta, saying supervisors clearly erred by leaving junior members overnight to keep watch on the Rochfort Bridge property of Jim Roszko, a man with a history of violence and a well-known hatred of the RCMP. He said the officers were exposed to an ambush because no one kept tabs on where Roszko was throughout the night, allowing him to sneak back onto the farm without the officers' knowledge. Montreal - The Gomery inquiry is gathering more details about how former Montreal advertising executive Jean Lafleur's company allegedly double-billed the federal sponsorship program and offered treats to prominent Liberals. Lafleur's company made millions of dollars in fees and commissions under the sponsorship program. St. John's, Nfld. - Pulling down the Canadian flag and bringing home the bacon from Ottawa gave Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams a huge boost in popularity. A new poll found 86 per cent of adults in the province are satisfied with the Williams government.
