Vienna - A United Nations board criticized a Canadian safe-injection site for drug users in a new report released Wednesday, saying it violates international drug treaties. The Vancouver site lets addicts inject drugs in a safe, sterile place rather than on the street, possibly with dirty needles. The International Narcotics Control Board is an independent UN organization that monitors international drug use. Vancouver's provincially-run site is the only one of its kind in North America. The site basically allows people to "inject drugs acquired on the illicit market with impunity," the report said. The United Nations organization also criticizes Ottawa's planned legislation to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana. Ottawa - One of former prime minister Jean Chrtien's closest aides approved one of the transactions in the federal sponsorship program, according to a document released on Tuesday. Jean Carle, a former vice-president of marketing at the Business Development Bank of Canada, authorized the payment of $375,000 for the creation of a series of TV spots that celebrated the turn of the millennium. Toronto - The Ontario government intends to permanently ban hunting and trapping wolves and coyotes in Algonquin Provincial Park and in the townships surrounding the park.
