Vancouver - The Vancouver café that sold marijuana alongside coffee and cake shut down Tuesday and surrendered its business licence, a day before city hall was to review the certificate. The controversial Da Kine Smoke and Beverage Shop hit the headlines last month after Vancouver police raided it. Police say the shop had revenues of nearly $30,000 a day. Owner Carol Gwilt has been in jail since Sept. 9 on a marijuana trafficking charge. She appeared in court on Wednesday, along with seven of her employees, and will remain in custody at least until her next court appearance, on Oct. 20. Gwilt and her employees were charged after police seized cash, nine kilograms of marijuana, some hashish and 300 marijuana and hash cookies. Halifax - A British helicopter has taken three sailors to an Irish hospital after airlifting them from the Canadian submarine that is drifting without power in the Atlantic off Ireland. One of the men is described as being in "critical" condition. St. John's - A high-profile 2001 attempt to treat dozens of gas-sniffing Innu children from Labrador by flying them to St. John's for three months was a failure, says a pediatrician who treated some of the patients. Dr. Ted Rosalessaid there was a lack of followup treatment after the federal and provincial governments spent millions on the program.
