Ottawa - The popularity of new reproductive technologies has caused a surge in multiple pregnancies with major health risks to the offspring and significant costs to the health system, says a report done for Health Canada. More than a third of the pregnancies achieved at fertility clinics result in multiple births, says the study by John Collins, formerly professor of obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University The study estimates that 34.7 per cent of live births obtained through assisted reproduction in 2002 involved twins, while 1.7 per cent involved triplets and quadruplets. Ottawa - Health Minister Anne McLellan has confirmed that a new Canadian Patient Safety Institute will be based in her home town of Edmonton. The $10-million institute will seek ways of reducing medical errors in Canadian hospitals, McLellan said in a statement Wednesday. "It is our hope that the Canadian Patient Safety Institute will reduce the risk of system errors and ensure that patients receive the best possible care," said McLellan. Vancouver - B.C. Ferries workers picketed the province's main ferry terminals Wednesday, defying a government back-to-work order and promising to shut down the entire fleet in an ever escalating dispute. "Shut it down," yelled workers huddling around a car at the Horseshoe Bay terminal west of Vancouver.
