Calgary - Former Prime Minister Jean Chretien will take the stand tomorrow in a lengthy $1.4-billion First Nations lawsuit being heard in Calgary. In the suit, which has already taken up 294 trial days, the Hobbema-area Samson Cree Nation alleges Ottawa mismanaged millions of dollars of the band's oil and gas royalties. Lawyers for the Samson Cree Nation served the former PM with the subpoena in December. Ottawa - A pending vacancy on the Supreme Court of Canada is putting heat on Prime Minister Paul Martin to change a much-criticized secret process for choosing the country's most powerful judges. Opposition MPs have loudly urged Martin to make good on his proposal to let Parliament review nominees to the court. Toronto - Tony Bethell, a Second World War fighter pilot who was among the survivors of a German POW camp involved in a mass breakout known as the Great Escape, has died at age 81. Born in Tanzania, he served as a fighter pilot with the Royal Air Force before moving to Canada in 1955.
