Saskatoon - Citizenship and Immigration Canada has banned the Canadian Bible Society from giving out Bibles at citizenship ceremonies, saying the practice is not consistent with the federal government's secular nature. "We find that allowing holy books to be made available at citizenship ceremonies detracts from this message and could be construed as a tacit endorsement of certain religions," the citizenship department told the society in a recent letter. The society has been handing out Bibles to new Canadians for 50 years, as well as distributing them to many other groups. Every year, it gives away thousands of the holy books in dozens of languages. Saint John, N.B. - A Lions Club in New Brunswick says it will reverse an earlier decision and accept two female applicants into the den. Lions Clubs around the world have been accepting women as members for many years. The international head office said it would look into the actions of the Simonds Lions Club. Ottawa - Universities' revenues grew at their fastest pace in three years in 2002/03, boosted by higher student fees and an increase in government funding. Some 154 universities and degree-granting institutions took in $18.6 billion, up 6.4 per cent. Income from student fees showed the largest jump in 10 years, growing by 10.4 per cent as students paid their schools $3.8 billion in fees.
