Labrador City, Nfd. - Unionized workers at Iron Ore Co. of Canada in Labrador City walked off the job on Monday morning following an overwhelming strike vote. Of 702 union members who voted, 701 voted to strike. Talks between the company and the United Steelworkers of America ended on Sunday. There are 1,250 unionized workers at the plant. Labrador City Mayor Gordon Letto is concerned that some of the one-industry town's 9,000 residents will leave if there's a long strike. Union and company negotiators met with a conciliator recently but were unable to resolve differences over seniority and contracting out. Vancouver - Vancouver Island was jolted on Monday morning by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1. The tremor rocked the B.C. south coast at about 1 a.m. local time. Seismologist John Cassidy at the Pacific Geoscience Centre said the quake was felt across Vancouver Island and as far away as Greater Vancouver and B.C.'s Sunshine Coast. There were no reports of damage other than some items falling from shelves. Edmonton - Rival gangs were behind a wedding reception brawl that resulted in the stabbing death of a 24-year-old man, police believe. Six other people were injured, including the groom, who was stabbed in the throat. Another man who was in a critical condition with head injuries.7/20/2004
