Edmonton - A woman has been charged with possession of an explosive substance after two pipe bombs were found by RCMP officers doing a security check on an airline passenger. Ottawa - As the federal NDP shows a surprising rise in public opinion polls, rookie leader Jack Layton may have political rivals Paul Martin, Stephen Harper and Peter MacKay to thank. Recent surveys show the NDP running second - albeit a distant second - to the Liberals under Martin and ahead of the united-right party being promoted by Conservative Leader MacKay and by Harper, head of the official Opposition Canadian Alliance. An internal Liberal poll that leaked last week suggested the Liberals had 41 per cent support among those polled, followed by 18 per cent for the NDP and 12 per cent for a united conservative party. Montreal - Half of Canadians expected Paul Martin to chart a new course as prime minister and two-thirds wanted him to confirm his leadership with a spring election, a poll suggests. The Leger Marketing survey indicated 65 per cent of Canadians wanted the incoming prime minister to hold an election next spring compared with 23 per cent who did not and 11 per cent who were undecided. Another 33 per cent felt Martin represented continuity.
