St. John's, Nfld. - After four weeks on the picket lines, public sector workers in Newfoundland began returning to work on Wednesday. The leaders of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees and Canadian Union of Public Employees called off the strike on Tuesday night, telling their 20,000 members to go back to work as soon as possible. The government is debating back to work legislation. Toronto - A University of Toronto centre that promotes research on the causes of mass violence was named after Pierre Trudeau in a ceremony on Tuesday. Ottawa - Senior government aides now say Prime Minister Paul Martin must decide by late next week whether to call a spring election, or else call it off. Some analysts have suggested that June 14 is the likeliest date. But behind the scenes the government is sifting through policy ideas submitted by each government department. Sources say two ideas stand out and will be part of the Liberal campaign platform as the party tries to woo back supporters alienated by the sponsorship scandal. One is a plan by Public Works to favour so-called "green" suppliers that meet strict environmental guidelines. The other, put forward by the Department of Immigration, is to work with smaller Canadian cities to help them recruit and keep skilled workers.
