Last week, the Gomery inquiry on the sponsorship scandal was told of an incident back in 1999 that suggested Martin might know more than he has claimed about how the controversial office was run. Martin was finance minister at the time, and records kept by an aide at Alfonso Gagliano's office showed that an unidentified person from Martin office called to ask why a sports organization headed by former hockey star Serge Savard hadn't had a response to its request for $600,000. Statistics show alcohol-related crashes kill more people in B.C. every year than homicides, drowning and fires combined. Ottawa - Ottawa needs to speed up its efforts to provide services in both French and English, said the official languages commissioner. Under the ambitious $750-million, five-year plan, the government is committed to providing services in both languages.
