Ottawa - Federal Liberals endorsed Prime Minister Paul Martin's leadership at their national policy convention on Sunday. Asked whether the party should organize a vote for a new leader, 88 per cent of delegates said "no." Liberal Party National Director Steve MacKinnon called the results "overwhelming" and "a great tribute" to Martin's leadership Riviere-Du-Loup, Que. - Some people in Quebec were jolted awake Sunday by an earthquake, the second to shake the province in the past week. There are no reports of damage from the 5.4 magnitude tremor. It was centered under the St. Lawrence River near Rivire-du-Loup, a town about 400 kilometres northeast of Montreal. Ottawa - Federal Liberal delegates voted in favour of a resolution Saturday that recommends tougher penalties for marijuana grow operations. The resolution urges a minimum two-year prison sentence for people convicted of illegally growing pot. Calls from police groups for tougher laws intensified this week after a shootout that killed four RCMP officers who had discovered a grow-op on a farm in Rochfort Bridge, Alta. Another resolution adopted at the national convention calls on Ottawa to legalize marijuana. It says the drug should be regulated and taxed, with some of the money set aside for anti-drug education programs. A proposal to maintain the traditional definition of marriage was defeated.
