Calagary - The man accused of throwing a pie at Alberta Premier Ralph Klein pleaded not guilty Monday to an assault charge. Chris Geogheghan, 24, did not say anything during his provincial court appearance. A one-day trial has been set for May 26 with a pre-trial conference April 7. Klein was hit in the face with a banana cream pie July 7 at his annual Stampede breakfast in Calgary. A man who tried to flee was tackled by security officers in front of hundreds of onlookers. That same day the premier said "it hurt" to have the pie thrown at him and said he wanted justice. Ottawa - A day after effectively securing his place as the next prime minister, Paul Martin promised a "fundamental shift" in government to make it more democratic. Martin, who in weekend voting won the support of almost 90 per cent of delegates to the Liberal party's November leadership convention, began laying the groundwork Monday for his transition to power. He said at a news conference that a top priority will be democratic reform - "the necessity of giving Parliament back to the people ... allowing Canadians to participate in the great decisions of the day. This is going to be a very different way of government - giving members of Parliament the capacity to influence legislation," He noted that Jean Chretien remains as prime minister and the transition will have to occur in stages.
