Ottawa - A meeting will be held between the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives on the eve of Parliament's return. There has been talk of a joint strategy for the coming Commons session between the right-of-centre parties, fuelled in part by the Sept. 14 dinner meeting involving Tory and Alliance House leaders and party whips. Vancouver - British Columbia reported its first probable case of West Nile virus ever Thursday, though officials say the woman involved was likely infected while travelling in the United States. Ottawa - Family and friends have a far greater influence on where immigrants to Canada settle than do job prospects, according to a groundbreaking survey by Statistics Canada released Thursday. About 44 per cent of economic-class immigrants in the survey said they chose their final destination based on family and friends living nearby, while 19 per cent cited job prospects. "This information will be very useful for policy makers in terms of how to encourage immigrants to settle in smaller towns and cities," said Tina Chui, a senior analyst at Statistics Canada. Only four per cent of newcomers chose to live outside a metropolitan area, with the vast majority - three quarters - settling in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.
