St. Johns, Nfld. - As many as 100,000 seabirds could die as a result of a 165,000-litre oil spill off the southeast corner of Newfoundland this week, a scientist says. "The numbers of birds that would be expected to be killed in a spill of this size would definitely number in the hundreds, possibly in the thousands, possibly even in the tens of thousands," said Ian Jone, the head of seabird ecology at Memorial University in St. John's. Scientists say Sunday's spill at the Terra Nova offshore oil platform happened at the worst possible time of year for seabirds. Ottawa - The number of Canadians using marijuana appears to have doubled over the past decade, according to the first major study of drug and alcohol use in the country in 10 years. The Canadian Addiction Survey reports that 14 per cent of Canadians said they had used cannabis in the past year, up from 7.4 per cent in 1994. The survey found that 45 per cent of Canadians have used marijuana at least once in their lifetime. About 70 per cent of those aged 18 to 24 reported using the substance. West Vancouver - Some West Vancouver condominium owners have gotten municipal politicians on their side in their battle to shut down what they call a smelly restaurant in their neighbourhood. West Vancouver is considering changing one of its bylaws so that businesses that offend some people's sense of smell can be fined up to $10,000.
