Ottawa - The federal government has rejected the idea of holding a national referendum on same-sex marriage. Alberta Premier Ralph Klein suggested the referendum after the Supreme Court said on Thursday that the federal government had the legal right to change the definition of marriage to include gays and lesbians. Federal Justice Minister Irwin Cotler said Klein is "trying to do an end-run around the Charter of Rights and Freedoms," and called the premier's plan a last-ditch manoeuvre that won't work. Moose Jaw, Sask. - Investigators spent Saturday collecting evidence at the scene where two Snowbird jets crashed Friday during a routine training flight, causing the death of pilot Capt. Miles Selby. Capt. Chuck Mallett, 35, of Edmonton, Alta., sustained minor injuries when he parachuted to safety. He is being treated at Moose Jaw Union Hospital. Officials still don't know what caused the mid-air collision. Ottawa - Five Liberal MPs joined with opposition politicians to uphold an all-party committee's move to trim $419,000 from Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson's $19.1 million annual budget. Critics have accused Clarkson of spending too much in carrying out her post. A $5.3-million tour of circumpolar countries in 2003, in which the Governor General and her husband were accompanied by a retinue of Canadian artists, drew particular ire.
