Ottawa - The Opposition now says it has proof that Prime Minister Paul Martin is guilty of the kind of cronyism he's trying to end. At issue are 10-year-old contracts awarded to Earnscliffe Strategy Group by the department, back when Paul Martin was finance minister. Earnscliffe is a research and consulting firm with close ties to Martin. The contracts in question were worth almost $325,000. And in a memo dated July 1995, Warren Kinsella, the former assistant of then public works minister David Dingwall, complained about them. "None of these procurements were conducted through (Public Works) contrary to cabinet approval guidelines," he wrote. "This is simply unacceptable." St. John's - There were more disruptions at Newfoundland's legislature on Tuesday, involving striking public sector workers. The increased tension comes as a round of exploratory talks between the government of Newfoundland and Labrador and its striking public sector unions is set to begin. The 20,000 government workers have been on strike for nearly three weeks. Toronto - Health Minister Pierre Pettigrew says Canadians' confidence in the health-care system is eroding due to long waiting times for medical services. Pettigrew promised a new federal approach to working with the provinces.
