Ottawa - Canada's cash-strapped military paid more than $25,000 for one of the government's Challenger executive jets to island-hop in the Caribbean with John Manley last March. The Privy Council Office ordered the empty jet to escort the deputy prime minister while he was on a sailing holiday to the Cayman Islands, said an office spokesman. The impending war between the United States and Iraq prompted PCO security officials to take the unusual step of ordering the escort, said Francois Jubinville. Ottawa - Former Ontario premier Mike Harris tossed the leadership race for the new Conservative party into turmoil Sunday by opting to stay out of the contest. Harris, who stepped down as premier last year, issued a statement saying it was a "great honour" and was "truly humbling" that so many supporters had urged him to seek the federal leadership. Saskatoon - With polls suggesting that the governing New Democrats and the Opposition Saskatchewan Party are in a dead heat, Saskatoon and its 12 seats have become the battleground for Wednesday's provincial election - a city with a swinging electorate. "We've always recognized Saskatoon as incredibly important to the Saskatchewan Party," leader Elwin Hermanson said. "We are going to work very hard, right up until the bell here in Saskatoon."
