Fredericton - New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord has decided not to seek the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, sources said Tuesday. Officials in the premier's office said Lord thought about the opportunity over the holidays, but has decided against a run. Ottawa - Following is part of the text of Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson's New Year's message released Monday: "As we begin a new year, it's good to reflect on what our society - our Canadian society - means across the country and how we express this. We express it by being people who want to help others and to contribute to the good of others. We express this abroad, where our troops help to bring peace in parts of the world where that good is certainly scarce enough. We express this also when we represent Canada and Canadian values to people outside our country who maybe have not seen what a dynamic, decent and inclusive country we have become in these early years of the 21st century. The public good is built through efforts to include, to accept, to make space for others. It means our willingness and ability to accept people of all circumstances, backgrounds and pasts. Let's make 2004 a year in which we all reflect on what we've done in the past. And go forward knowing that we have a unique gift to offer to the world - as Canadians with our values, our acceptance and our dreams.
