Calgary - A newborn baby was saved Tuesday night when a woman discovered him wrapped in a garbage bag and placed with the trash in a Calgary neighbourhood. The boy, believed to be only hours old, was suffering from mild hypothermia and is in hospital. Temperatures in Calgary hovered around 10 degrees Tuesday evening. The woman was out walking her dog around 8:40 p.m. when she heard a sound from the bag, which was in the driveway of a home in the city's northwest. She called police and paramedics when she discovered the infant inside. The garbage would have been collected Wednesday morning. Ottawa - The Conservative Party of Canada will hold its first national policy convention next March, an indication that the party doesn't plan to bring down the Liberal minority government before then. In announcing the convention on Wednesday, Conservative Leader Stephen Harper said he doesn't think Canadians want to face another election so soon. He advised Prime Minister Paul Martin to co-operate with opposition parties when the House of Commons resumes sitting in October. "If he's defeated before next year, it's because he wants to be defeated," said Harper. Fredericton - The union representing 5,000 hospital nurses in New Brunswick has reached a tentative contract agreement with the province, the government said on Tuesday.
