Saskatoon - In a scrappy election race that even the pollsters say is too close to call, the leaders of Saskatchewan's two front-running parties will head into Tuesday's televised debate ready to lay everything on the line. Both NDP Leader Lorne Calvert and Saskatchewan Party Leader Elwin Hermanson say they are ready for a challenging and passionate forum on the issues facing voters in the Nov. 5 election. Tortonto - The mother of a gifted nine-year-old abducted from her bedroom a week ago issued an open letter Sunday pleading for her daughter's safe return. Outside the girl's suburban home, where candles flickered on the doorstep, family friend Jack Jia said her family hopes the letter will play on the conscience of whoever might be keeping little Cecilia Zhang. A grid search was still underway and investigators were focusing their efforts on more than 700 calls made to a special tip line. Officers completed a door-to-door canvas of the suburban neighbourhood on Friday. Vancouver - The federal government is giving British Columbia a $100-million advance under its disaster assistance program to help cover costs of the province's devastating forest fire season, Defence Minister John McCallum said Saturday. "The $100 million is an advance payment," McCallum stressed.
