Vancouver - Two men accused of beating a gay man to death in Vancouver's Stanley Park three years ago pleaded not guilty as their trial began Monday. Aaron Webster, 41, was beaten to death with a club in November 2001. His body was found in an area of the park where homosexual men cruise at night, prompting allegations of gay bashing. Two youths, who were minors at the time of the beating, have already pleaded guilty and been sentenced to three years behind bars. Regina - The Saskatchewan government has settled with a couple who ran a Martensville day care at the centre of a notorious case of wrongful sex-abuse charges. Justice Minister Frank Quennell said Monday that the province will pay $925,000 to Ron and Linda Sterling and to someone who was a minor when charges were laid in 1992. The Sterlings, who operated a home day care in Martensville, just north of Saskatoon, were among nine people charged with 180 sex-related offences against children in their care. Only one of the accused was ever found guilty. Hamilton - A would-be robber planning to hold up a southern Ontario grocery store was foiled Monday. The man told the cashier at the express checkout that he had a weapon and wanted money, however, the person standing behind him in the lineup was an off-duty police officer, who promptly arrested him.
