Ottawa - The federal government is close to suing people who billed the federal sponsorship program but provided little of value in return for the money, Public Works Minister Stephen Owen said. "We will be acting to recover É wherever there's an indication of either false billing or billing in any way that doesn't represent value for money for Canadians." A report filed this year by the auditor general says the sponsorship program was used to pay $100 million to Liberal-friendly advertising firms in return for little or no work. Regina - Snow Ð lots of it Ð fell on parts of Western Canada and northwestern Ontario on Tuesday, causing police to issue travel advisories and shut down highways. In southern Alberta people were struggling to cope with the snowfall. Calgary was expecting up to 10 centimetres of snow. But southeastern Saskatchewan was expected to be hit the hardest, with up to 40 centimetres of snow expected. Ottawa - The charges laid in the sponsorship scandal have intensified the political battle over the parliamentary inquiry. Liberal MPs on the public accounts committee want to take a break from hearing witnesses in order to write an interim report. But opposition members say the timing of the charges is suspicious and will allow the government to end any further questions on the matter.
